Likely the most authentic ethno belt: Hand-knotted in conformity with the knot writing method of the Incas.

By ethno specialist Smitten.

Many of the mass-produced accessories with random patterns fall under the trend called ‘ethno’. However, these Quipu belts are true masterpieces of Peruvian folk art. The ancient Peruvian knot writing method Quipu was established more than 2,000 years B.C. and can be traced to the Inca era around 1,530 A.C. A small group of women from the Paccha community still cultivates this traditional knotting technique today.
To create a belt, roughly 20 threads of impressive length are being knotted to a length of up to 15 metres.
The modest homes of the Andean village don’t offer enough space for that. Thus the threads are stretched outdoors. The knotting technique alone produces these beautiful lozenge patterns that vary depending on the shade and number (2 to max. 5) of the selected colours.
It upgrades casual denim and chino outfits to the fashionable ethno style.
The German company Smitten brings these delightful masterpieces to Europe and ensures fair wages and humane working conditions at the production site.

Width approx. 3.5cm (1.4″). Made of nylon. Studs, loops and buckle made of metal, galvanised antique silver.
