In contrast to the buttoned precursor A1 model, the A2, introduced in 1931, was the first US flight jacket with a zip – to protect against wind – covered by a press stud front. Other striking details of the iconic classic are the buttoned tabs on the shoulders (originally for attaching a rank insignia), the large flap pockets (which, according to tradition, were supplemented later by today’s side openings) and the stretchy knitted cuffs and hem.
