In the 1980s, American psychiatrist Alfred Lewy discovered that bright light over 2,500 lux inhibits the release of melatonin and increases the production of serotonin. In winter, more melatonin, which is a messenger substance that controls the sleep-wake cycle, is sent to the brain. This hormone is produced in the brain’s pineal gland and is only released in the dark. In the darker months, melatonin reaches its highest concentration, which makes many people feel rather gloomy. At the same time there is a lack of serotonine, also known as the “happy hormone”, the production of which is stimulated by sunlight.
