The stitched-cord accordion hat in hemp: The nearly indestructible hat that you can fold up.
Made by Mayser – a traditional German hatmaker dating back to 1880.
The resilience of this elegant hat will amaze you; especially when you unpack your luggage, and it appears completely unscathed. It garners its strength from both the material and the workmanship. You can fold it flat like an accordion and then pop it back to its original shape, as if by magic.
Secret 1: Tear-resistant hemp fibres – twisted not woven.
Hemp has been used in the textile industry for thousands of years because its fibres are extremely tough. Hatmakers prize hemp: It is even more durable and tear-resistant than Panama straw – especially when the fibres are twisted instead of braided.
Secret 2: Stitched cords – an almost forgotten technique.
The traditional hatmaker Mayser has revived the forgotten world of stitched cords: Thin cords of hemp, twisted with cotton, are sewn together using special machines; sometimes as steps, and sometimes as an accordian, depending on the hat in question. The result is a very flexible hat which will always return to its original shape. This hat features a narrow brim, making it extremely versatile: You can use it as a chic sun hat on holiday, as a fashion accessory when out and about in the city, or as an elegant accessory to complement a summer dress at garden parties.
